Watford City’s boys and girls track teams ran away from the competition at the Region 7 Track Meet held this past Saturday at Watford City with the boys team rolling up 223 points to outdistance second place Stanley-Powers Lake by 78 points, while the girls team cruised to an easy title win with 214 points followed by Parshall with 121 points.
The Wolves will be advancing nine boys and 14 girls to the State Class B Track Meet this Friday and Saturday in Bismarck.
Winning regional championship titles for the boys team was Tyler Bates in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.36; Tyler Flatland in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.33; Jason Shipman in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.75; Tyler Bates in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.24; and Brandon Stoker in the pole vault with a vault of 8’0”.
“The conditions on Saturday were the worst that I have ever seen for a state qualifying meet,” stated David Gumke, Wolves’ boys head coach. “But I’m very proud of how the guys competed even in those conditions. Jason Shipman was able to improve his state qualifying time in the 110 meter hurdles.”
Also placing first was the boys 800 meter relay team (Josh Johnson, Jason Shipman, Brice Brenno and Tyler Flatland) with a time of 1:39.00; the 400 meter relay team (Josh Johnson, Jason Shipman, Brice Brenno and Tyler Bates) with a time of 47.89; and the 1,600 meter relay team (Tyler Bates, Curtis Lohse, Cole Rolfsrud and Tyler Flatland) with a time of 3:41.04.
Claiming three regional titles in the girls division for Watford City was Dani Bates in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.31; Brianna Allex in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.04; Hayley Moe in the high jump with a leap of 4’9”; Fallon Fladeland in the pole vault with a vault of 7’0”; and Abby Brown in the discus with a throw of 99’11”.
“Through the rain and wind, the athletes competed very well during the past week,” stated Greg Brown, Wolves’ girls head coach. “We have 14 different girls competing at the State Meet this weekend, and once you are in, anything can happen.”
While both Watford City coaches know that the times that their athletes have turned in so far are not the best, they know that they will perform better at State.
“We can shock a few people at the State Meet with the athletes we have,” stated Brown. “The girls have all worked hard this season to get to where we are and I feel the State Meet is going to be exciting.”
Tyler Flatland and Marti Quale were named the Region 7 Senior Athletes of the Year while Greg Brown was honored as the Region 7 Girls Coach of the Year.
