Watford City got on the scoreboard first against a very strong Stanley football team. But the Wolves were no match for the Blue Jays on Friday evening as Stanley came back to score five unanswered touchdowns to post a 35-7 win over Watford City.
Watford City has a key game this week against Williams County, with the winner more likely making the playoffs.
And even though the Wolves lost to Stanley, Fridley says his team needs to look at it as a learning experience.
“We have to bounce back after the Stanley loss,” states Coach Fridley. “We played poorly at Stanley and we need to tackle better and not get down on ourselves if we fall behind. Stanley is a very good football team, probably the best team we played this year. And you can learn from playing that type of team, which hopefully we did.”
“After Tyler Bates scored on a 73-yard pass from Lucas Nicholson in the first quarter, it was all Stanley,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach.
Stanley led, 14-7, after the first quarter of play.
Poor tackling on Watford City’s part, according to Fridley, allowed Stanley to blow the game open.
“We stopped both of Stanley’s touchdowns of 60 and 70 yards, but failed to finish tackles,” stated Fridley. “That is how we played the first half.”
This week, the Wolves will host Williams County on Friday in Watford City’s Homecoming game and Fridley says it will be a critical game for both teams. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Fridley Field.
“This week, we face a very good defensive team in Williams County,” states Fridley. “And they like to run the ball. So we will be tested on both sides of the ball.”
If the Wolves want to make the playoffs, according to Fridley, Watford City is going to have to win Friday’s game.
“The winner of Friday’s game will more than likely make the playoffs,” states Fridley.
