Kalberer takes 7th at State B Wrestling Tourney

Trevor Kalberer took seventh place at 145 pounds to rack up nine of  Watford City’s 13 points at the State Class B Wrestling Tournament, which concluded on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Bismarck Civic Center.
Kalberer, a sophomore who entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed with a 32-13 record, pinned Chandler Meiers of Stanley-Powers Lake-Tioga in 3:40 in his first match before he was decisioned 11-2 by Cody Voegeli of Oakes. Voegeli went on to claim the 145-pound title at the State Tournament.
In wrestleback action, Kalberer pinned Tanner Keller of Harvey-Wells County in 1:47 and then was pinned by Brock Nagel of Linton in 3:00. Nagel would ultimately take fourth in the tournament.
In the seventh place match, Kalberer won a 6-0 decision over Carrington’s Riley Lura.
Watford City’s other seven wrestlers, who qualified for the State Class B Tournament, failed to place.
Logan Gumke, a freshman at 106 pounds, was decisioned 10-0 in his opening match by Sawyer Blumhardt of Central Cass. Blumhardt, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, went on to take third place. In his second match, Gumke was eliminated from the tournament when he was decisioned 9-4 by Brayden Horgan of North Border-Cavalier. Horgan went on to take eighth place at State.
Coleton Jore, a freshman at 113 pounds, was decisioned 20-3 in his opening round by Nathan Volk of Central Cass. Volk, the No. 6 seed in the tournament would go on to take fifth in the tournament. In his second match, Jore lost a 9-3 decision to Josh Snyder of Beulah-Hazen and was eliminated from the tournament.
Clay Jorgenson, a freshman for Watford City at 126 pounds was pinned in his opening round match in 5:07 by Walker Carr of Carrington, the No. 4 seed. Carr went on to take fourth in the tournament. In his second match, Jorgenson was decisioned 10-0 by Kyle Schmidt of Bishop Ryan.
Josh Johnson, a junior at 132 pounds, was decisioned 9-3 in his opening match by Chris Miller of North Border-Cavalier, the No. 8 seed. Johnson then pinned Reid Mundahl of Rugby in 2:26 and scored three points for the Wolves before he was decisioned 12-8 by Preston Koenig, the No. 7 seed from Central Cass.
Austin Garmann, a junior at 152 pounds, was pinned in 2:18 by Lane Anderson of Carrington in his opening match. Anderson, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, went on to take seventh place. Garmann was then eliminated from the tournament when he was pinned in 4:16 by Jeff Abrahamson of Hettinger, who went on to take eighth place.
Joe Nelson, a junior at 160 pounds, was pinned in 0:51 by Trent Ptacek, the No. 7 seed from Oakes, in his opening match. Ptacek went on to take fifth in the tournament. Nelson then won a 2-1 decision over Colby Steeke of Hettinger and scored one point for Watford City before he was then eliminated from the tournament when he was pinned in 0:50 by Jace Lura, the No. 8 seed from Carrington. Lura went on to take eighth place.
Keegan Thompson, a freshman at 170 pounds, was pinned in 1:05 in his opening match by the No. 7 seed, Jimi Bridges of Velva. Bridges went on to take third place in the tournament. Thompson was then eliminated from the tournament when he was pinned in 3:32 by Dylan Morin of Rugby.
