Watford City’s Nick Liebel, a sophomore, battled back from an 8th place standing after shooting a seven over par, 79, on the first day of the Class B Boys State Golf Tournament to take second place individually and earn All-State honors.
During the first round of the tournament at Jamestown Hillcrest Golf Course, Liebel shot a solid 36 on the front nine before struggling on the back nine to card a 43.
“The conditions were not very good on Tuesday as it was a cold, windy, overcast day with the golfers competing under misty conditions,” stated Matt Liebel, Wolves head boys golf coach.
But Liebel came back strong in the second day of the tournament as he fired a two over par, 37, on the front nine and then finished his round with a one under par, 36, to move into a tie for second place overall. Liebel finished three strokes behind Hazen’s Chad Marshall, the tournament medalist.
With his second place finish, Liebel earned All-State honors.
Seth Dougherty, who also qualified for the State Tournament for Watford City was unable to compete because of illness.
