Watford City’s varsity cross country teams had a great showing at the Bismarck Meet this past Saturday with Asha Smith winning the Class B girls division with a time of 15:01, while Nicole Rasmussen came in seventh with a time of 16.07.
“The athletes ran extremely well in Bismarck at McDowell Dam with many of our runners setting their personal best times for the season on Saturday,” stated Greg Brown, Wolves’ head coach. “We had three that finished in the top 20 between the three races. Dustin Kleppen was 20th for the boys, which is a huge accomplishment as he ran against some of the best boys in the state and moved up many places when compared to other races.”
Finishing behind Smith and Rasmussen for the Wolves girls varsity team was Addison Sundeen, 17:36; Lea Arndt, 17:46; Kara Wold, 18:18; McKayla Haugeberg, 18:37; Tara Loomer, 19:11; and Katie Skarda, 19:23.
Dustin Kleppen paced the Watford City boys varsity team with a time of 18:58, while Logan Gumke finished in 19:07. Other Watford City runners were Michael Brown, 20:11; Braedon Gumke, 21:22; Joseph Rasmussen, 21:44; Dakota Garmann, 24:28; Josh Segneri, 25:43; and Trevor Alveshere, 25:44.
“The athletes continue to keep working hard, and the end is now in sight,” states Brown. “As a coach, you always wonder have I pushed them hard enough or not. These athletes  have been pushed and will be pushed for the last month of the season.”
Three Watford boys also competed in the junior high division in Bismarck with Cole McGorman finishing in a time of 12:02, while Cale Bandelin and Hunter DeFoe finished with times of 13:27 and 13:28, respectively.
The next meet for the Wolves will be on Oct. 6 when they compete in Rugby and compete in the Regional Meet in Parshall on Oct. 13.
