With a 46-0 shutout of the New Town Eagles last Friday, the Watford City Wolves wrapped up their regular season play with a 5-3 record and earned the No. 2 spot in Region III for the upcoming playoffs.
With the win over New Town, the Wolves will be hosting Heart River in the first round of the Class A football playoffs with Watford City earning a home field advantage. The game will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Fridley Field.
Against New Town, Watford City got on the scoreboard early, scoring 39 points in the first half and then added their final touchdown in the third quarter.
In the first quarter, Josh Rolfsrud opened the Wolves’ scoring as he capped off an 80-yard drive with a 13- yard touchdown run. On New Town’s next possession, Dan Marmon intercepted an Eagles’ pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. Marmon then scored his second touchdown of the game on a run of 62 yards. Beau Heiser kicked two of three conversions to give Watford City a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Watford City took its offensive action to the air as the Wolves scored three touchdowns. Marmon scored the first touchdown from a pass from Keegan Thompson covering 12 yards and then Tyler Bates scored the next two touchdowns on receptions of 14 and 20 yards from Keegan Thompson. Heiser kicked one extra point and the Wolves were up 39-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, Rolfsrud scored his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run and with Heiser’s kick, the Wolves held a commanding, 46-0, lead. With the win securely in hand, Watford City’s reserve players finished up the game for the Wolves in the third and fourth quarters.
“The defense did an outstanding job giving up only 17 yards rushing on 21 attempts and intercepted four passes,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach. “The defense was led by Joe Nelson, Dalton Wright, Beau Heiser and Shane Jorgenson.”
But Fridley knows that Heart River is going to be a very tough opponent in Saturday’s playoff game. The Cougars defeated the Wolves, 48-13, in the first game of the season.
“We need to have our best game against Heart River,” stated Coach Fridley. “The Cougars will test us with a good running game.”
Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Fridley Field.
