Cagers get back to action

After a long Christmas break from basketball, the Watford City boys varsity basketball team got back into action last week with the Wolves falling to Killdeer, 56-39, before bouncing back to knock off Beach, 69-58.
This week the Wolves, who are 3-4 on the season, will host North Shore-Plaza on Thursday and then take on Powers Lake on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Williston State College. On Saturday, the Wolves will travel to Ray for a 4:45 p.m. game.
Killdeer 56, Watford City 39
The long Christmas break from action definitely showed last Thursday as the Wolves fell to the Killdeer Cowboys, 56-39.
The Cowboys jumped out to a quick, 15-4, first quarter lead and never looked back en route to an easy win.
“Not playing since Dec. 14 hurt us,” stated Randy Cranston, Wolves’ head coach. “However, Killdeer played good defense and we didn’t take very good care of the ball and did not shoot well.”
The Wolves trailed Killdeer, 28-11, at halftime and by 15 points, 40-25, at the end of three quarters of play.
Logan Fettig paced the Wolves in scoring with 12 points, while David Kline, Mitchell Liebel and Dustin Kleppen netted seven points each.
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Seth Indergard with two points, while Cole McGorman and Charles Villanueva netted one point each.

Watford City 69, Beach 58
After struggling against Killdeer on Thursday, Watford City turned its game around on Friday as the Wolves upended the Beach Bucs, 69-58, to improve their season record to 3-4.
“We came out and played well on both sides off the ball,” stated Cranston. “However, we struggled to close this one out as we were up 20 points early in the fourth quarter, only to give it right back.”
The Wolves, who led throughout the game, held an 18-14, first quarter lead, before taking a 33-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
David Kline led both teams in scoring as he netted 24 points for the Wolves.
Also scoring for Watford City was Mitchell Liebel and Logan Fettig with nine points each, Andrew Sampsel with eight points, Dustin Kleppen and Bo Cook with six points each and Seth Indergard with two points.
“We took some strides in the right direction in this game,” stated Cranston. “Hopefully, with our busy week this week, we keep making progress.”
