As the cross country season is rapidly drawing to a close, Greg Brown, Watford City’s head coach, is anxiously waiting to see how his teams will compete at the Regional Meet this Saturday. The meet will be held at the Prairie Knights Casino Marina on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Brown says his teams are up to the challenge.
“The athletes have been doing a great job, competing and accepting the challenge of working hard each and every day,” states Brown. “We have great athletes here at Watford City who are continually working each and every day to get better and to become the best that they can be.”
That dedication and hard work showed up this past Saturday as both the Wolves boys and girls teams took fourth place at a WDA meet in Minot, which only featured Class A schools.
At Minot, Asha Smith and Kayla Ogle finished in third and fourth places, respectively, with times of  15:32 and 15:50, to pace the girls team, while Raehs Peutz paced the boys team with a fourth place finish in a time of 17:29.
“We have a lot to be proud about with these athletes,” states Brown. “They represent our community very well at the regional and state level.”
Also placing for the girls team at Minot was Gemma Campbell, 46th,  18:52; Lindsay Peterson, 47th, 19:04; Gabby Hogue, 53rd, 20:25; and Becca Campbell, 58th, 22:42.
Following Peutz across the finish line in the boys division was Devin Schmitz, 27th, 19:09; Dakota Garmann, 29th, 19:09; Osman Leon, 35th, 19:36; Cole McGorman, 45th, 20:40; Hunter DeFoe, 49th, 21:13; Jack Gillispey, 53rd, 21:39; Carter Zenz, 56th, 22:01; Ethan Lyon, 57th, 22:02; Cauy Hartel, 59th, 22:12; Andrew Trottier, 63rd, 23:25; and Tanner Ponto, 67th, 28:46.
In the junior high girls division, Svea Pearson and Amelia Honstein placed 51st and 53rd, respectively, in times of 17:54 and 19:28, while Chris Ferry took 73rd in 17:14 in the boys division.
“We are entering our championship part of the season,” states Brown. “We have Region this weekend at Prairie Knights Casino Marina and then head to the State Cross Country Meet in Grand Forks in two weeks. Times do not matter at Region and State. Now we go and compete against the best runners in the state.”
