Wrestling Wolves head to Region 4 action

The Watford City Wrestling Wolves closed out their 2009-10 dual season with wins over New Salem and Stanley in a triangular meet last Friday. The Wolves defeated New Salem 48-28 and downed Stanley 57-15, while New Salem defeated Stanley 42-24.
This Saturday, the Wolves will compete in the Region 4 Tournament in Beulah with the top four wrestlers in each weight class advancing to the State Wrestling Tournament in Fargo on Feb. 18-20.
Watford City, the defending championship team in Region 4,  has a great chance to send 14 wrestlers to the State Meet as most are rated among the top four in Region 4.
Competing for Watford City at the Region 4 Meet:
Joe Nelson at 103 pounds is a freshman with a 9-20 record. Nelson, who will be seeded No. 4 or 5 in the Region, will have to win two matches to qualify for State.
Trevor Kalberer at 112 pounds is an eighth grader with a 22-6 record. Kalberer will be seeded No. 2 at Region and will have his biggest test in making the finals from Jared Lee-Gay from Killdeer. Kalberer has beaten Lee-Gay three times this season.
Colton Jore at 119 pounds is a seventh grader who has been wrestling at 103 pounds all season. Jore, who has a 3-9 record, will be seeded No. 5 at Region and will have to win two matches to qualify for State.
Gus Nelson at 125 pounds is a sophomore with a 9-17 record. Nelson will be seeded No. 4 in the Region and will have to beat either the No. 5 or 6 seeded wrestler to qualify for State.
Adam Greenhaw at 130 pounds is a senior who placed fourth at State last year at 119 pounds. Greenhaw will be seeded No. 4 at Region.
Brady Lund at 135 pounds is a junior with a 28-1 record and was the Region Champion at 125 pounds last year. Lund will be only one of two No. 1 seeds in the tournament for Watford City and will face his toughest competition from Craig Bucholz of Bowman. Lund has beaten Bucholz three times this season.
Jeremy Heim at 140 pounds is a senior who has struggled all season with illness and injuries. As last year’s Region runner-up, Heim is shooting for that spot or better on Saturday.
Jake Thomas at 145 pounds is a junior with a 21-5 record. Thomas should be the No. 1 seed and make the finals against either Jordan Mann from Beulah or River Voigt from Killdeer. Thomas placed second at 140 pounds last year in Region.
Karson Knudtson at 152 pounds is a junior with a 22-13 record. Knudtson will be seeded No. 2 or 3 at Region. Knudtson will have his toughest test from Garrett Slater from Hettinger and Jared Weinand from Beulah.
Kalin Mogen at 160 pounds is a junior with a 27-8 record. Mogen will be seeded No. 3 at Region and will have to avenge an earlier season loss to Isiah Krebs of Beulah. The winner of that match will most likely take on Nate Seeger, the No. 1 seed, from New Salem.
Nolan Kalberer at 171 pounds is a junior with a 20-13 record. Kalberer will be seeded No. 3 at Region below the top two wrestlers in the state in that weight class.
Cody Fisketjon at 189 pounds is a senior with a 20-11 record. Fisketjon will be seeded No. 2 and will have his biggest test making the finals from Derrek Heins from New Salem.
Ben Haugeberg at 215 pounds has a record of 14-13. In only his second season of wrestling, Haugeberg will be seeded No. 2 at Region.
Blake Wold at 285 pounds is a senior who only started wrestling after Christmas. Wold will be either the No. 2 or 3 seed at Region and has a shot at making it into the finals.
Last Friday night’s win over New Salem gave the Wolves a third place finish in the Region 4 dual meet competition. Earlier this season the Wolves lost to Killdeer 40-39 and to Hettinger 33-25 and posted wins over Beulah 48-33. Bowman, Standing Rock and Beach did not compete in the dual meet competition of the Region.
