The Watford City Wolves boys golf team had its best outing of the season as the Wolves took third place at the Ray Invitational last week.
Nick Liebel led the Wolves as he carded a 73 to place second individually, while Chris Larsen shot an 84.
“The top golfers and teams in our Region were at Ray, so it was a good indicator of where we are,” stated Scott Wisness, Wolves’ head coach. “MLS (Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood) and Lewis & Clark (Berthold) have been the teams to catch up to at this point. We’re still over 20 strokes higher than them, so we are hoping to close the gap and reach our goal of qualifying for State.”
“Nick had another good day, placing second and Chris scored in the low 80s for us, but will hopefully score in the 70s by the regional,” stated Wisness. “Colter and Mitchell both have the potential to lower their scores by 10, so I am positive of our chances of reaching our goal as a team.”
Colter Maki finished the tournament with a 92, while Mitchell Liebel carded a 96. Also competing for the Wolves was Alex Hansen, 103; and Kalen Hartel, 109.
This week, the varsity will be at Garrison on Friday and then compete in the Northwest Conference Tournament in Stanley on Monday, May 10.
