Watford City’s 15-6 win over the Killdeer Cowboys on Friday evening not only improved the Wolves’ season record to a perfect 4-0, but also gave Coach Fred Fridley his 300th career win.
The Watford City Wolves, the No. 2-ranked team in Class A football, used a strong first half to defeat the Killdeer Cowboys, the No. 5-ranked team, in a matchup of Region IV powers.
Watford City scored three times in the first half building a 15-0 lead. In the first quarter, the Wolves scored on their first possession when Trey Jacobson scrambled out of trouble and found Shawn Fulwider on a nine- yard touchdown pass. The extra point failed and the Wolves led 6-0 after one quarter.
On the Wolves second possession, Jacobson scored on a one-yard run; however, the Wolves again failed to convert the PAT.
The big play on the drive was when the Wolves faced fourth and five at the eight-yard line with Jacobson finding Brady Lund on a screen pass. That play was good for seven yards to get the ball to the one-yard line.
Late in the second period, the Wolves again marched deep into Killdeer territory, and this time Kalin Mogen kicked a 33-yard field goal to put the Wolves on top 15-0 at halftime.
Watford City’s defense was rock solid in the first half giving up 48 yards rushing, eight yards passing and three first downs.
In the second half, the Cowboys had a couple of chances to score, but the defense did their job stopping Killdeer. The Cowboys scored in the fourth quarter for a final 15-6 score.
“Killdeer is a very good football team, but our team rose to the occasion and outplayed the Cowboys,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach. “Killdeer had a big size advantage, but our quickness was the difference in the game. Plus our line play was the best it has been all year.”
According to Fridley, Jake Thomas, Douglas Nordby, Kalin Mogen, Douglas Rolfson, Bradlyn Fettig and Fulwider did a great job on defense and offensively, running backs Brady Lund, Nolan Kalberer and Karson Knudtson ran hard and made some big blocks.
The Wolves are on the road again this week when they travel to Belfield for another key game facing the Heart River Cougars. Game time is set for 8 p.m. CDT.
“Heart River is a very explosive team and they are experienced,” states Fridley.
