Marie Rolfson Skoglund was born in 1919 on the family farm to Marselius and Ingerid Rolfson in Garden Township. Her parents were homesteaders who emigrated from Norway. She attended the Rolfson grade school and later graduated from Watford City High School in 1938. She then later attended Dickinson State College where she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught school for six years. Her first country school was the Kinning School. She also taught Sunday school for many years.
On July 26, 1947, Marie was united in marriage to John Skoglund at the Garden Lutheran Church where she had been baptized and confirmed. John and Marie farmed and raised cattle. Marie continued living on the family farm until she moved to Watford City. She became a resident of the Good Shepherd Home in 2005.
Marie's children fondly remember her singing hymns while she did her housework. She and Johnny had a great gift of hospitality and many were welcomed over the years around the table. She enjoyed visits with friends and family all of her days. A highlight of her life was her trip to Norway to see her relatives when she was 60 years old, as she had a great interest in her heritage. Marie loved visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved and will be missed by her family and community.
Marie died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at the McKenzie County Hospital in Watford City, N.D.
