Betty Gauthier

Betty Gauthier, 73, of Watford City, N.D., more recently of the Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home in Williston, died Friday, April 22, 2011, at the home. Cremation will take place and memorial services are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home of Watford City. Friends may sign the online register book and give their condolences at www.fulkersons.com
Betty Mae Medalen was born in Willow City, N.D., on Dec. 15, 1937, the second of eight daughters of John and Ruth Medalen. Betty was raised on a family farm and attended school in Willow City, N.D. After graduating from high school in 1956, she moved to Minot, N.D., and worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was united in marriage to Hector Gauthier on July 19, 1958. The first years of her marriage to Hector, they resided at the Fort Riley Kansas Army Base, where he was training and serving in the Army Medical Corp. Thereafter, they moved to Watford City and made it their permanent home. Through their union, three children were born. Betty worked as a nurse’s aide at the Good Shepherd Home from approximately 1964-1966. She worked as a homemaker while raising her children.
After her children were raised, she began working at the Good Shepherd Home again – this time, as a dining room and laundry aide from 1989– 2001. She derived great pleasure and pride from her job, helping the residents, and interacting with her coworkers. She had a great sense of humor, a loving and caring disposition, and always had a smile to share.
Betty enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, and photo scrapbooking. She was a devoted wife and mother, and a loyal friend. She loved cats, and always had a housecat or two, along with feeding and adopting any stray in need. She enjoyed working in her garden and flowerbeds with her husband, along with backyard grilling and relaxing. She enjoyed many types of music, especially Elvis.
She is survived by her husband, Hector, of Watford City, N.D.; three children, Debbie, Anita, and Carmen; three grandchildren, Taylor, Reece, and Zavier; and seven  sisters, Joanne, Lylis, LaVonne, Blenda, Judy, Lynne, and Sue.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
