Eugene Braaten

Eugene Braaten, 80, of rural Arnegard, N.D., passed away at his home on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009. Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Wilmington Lutheran Church in Arnegard and Pastor Tim Swenson officiated. Eugene Morris Braaten was the second of six children born to Morris and Sofie (Eikren) Braaten on Jan. 17, 1929. He attended various country schools in Elsworth Township, including in the family home with his mother as a teacher. He graduated as an Arnegard Spud from Arnegard High School in 1947. He attended Hanson Mechanical Trade School in Fargo.
He served in the armed forces from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Germany. Upon completion of service, he returned to the family farm and farmed with his father.
On June 7, 1959, Eugene was united in marriage to Della Bender at Wilmington Lutheran Church in Arnegard, N.D. They made the family farm their home and lifework for 50 years. Their son, Craig, took over the farming business in 1994. Eugene was blessed to be able to work alongside Craig until the day of his death.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Della; daughter, Colette (Jorge) Encalada of Long Beach, Calif.; son, Craig (Marie) of Arnegard, N.D.; six grandchildren, Jenny Larsen, Sophia Encalada, Cammi Larsen, Theresa Encalada, Nicole Encalada and Wyatt Braaten; four great-grandchildren, Ciara, Baylee, Ryder and Hartley; brothers, Jerome (Rachel) Braaten, of Sidney, Mont., and Roger (Pauline) Braaten, of Longview, Wash.; sister, Bette (Darrell) Johnson, of Brooking, S.D.; aunt, Bernice Taylor, of Washougal, Wash.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Morris and Sofie Braaten; his brother, Lloyd Braaten; and sister, Phyllis Evanson Mangel.
