LaVetta Haugen

LaVetta passed away, June 19, 2019, at Good Shepherd nursing home in Watford City, N.D.
LaVetta Jean Haugen was born on August 31, 1929, in Scoby, Mont. She lived and was raised in the rural Keene area by her parents, Ruby (Swenson) Sivertson and adoptive father Hans Sivertson. She was a member of the Clear Creek Lutheran Church.
On Sept. 27, 1944, she married her teen sweetheart Wilson (Willie) Haugen. They started their life together on a farm by Peaked Butte, in McKenzie County. They were blessed with three daughters and a son. They later moved their farm house to Keene where they were employed at the Black Gold Hotel-Café. Together they started their own business Haugen’s Painting and Decorating where LaVetta continued to run the business. The children were pretty much raised with a paint brush in hand.
LaVetta also cooked for the Lakeside Senior Center in New Town along with her daughter Rosie for about 10 years which she very much enjoyed. She also enjoyed keeping a beautiful yard filled with various flowers and the birds that she fed. LaVetta was known for all of the beautiful birthday, wedding, and anniversary cakes she made throughout the years. Playing cards was another pastime she enjoyed, especially “Pounce.” She ruled that game!
LaVetta’s greatest love was that of her family. She was a devoted mother/grandmother. Every birthday and holiday was celebrated, anything to bring the family together. She loved to cook and entertain. She cherished all those who took time to drop in and “visit.” Her faith in God and the power of prayer was a great comfort to her. She had a great love for Gospel/Country music. Due to health problems, she became a resident of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in 2016 where she resided up until the time of her death.
