Mertie Stompro Sr.

Mertie R. Stompro Sr., 87, died peacefully on Oct. 2, 2018, at the Good Shepherd Home, Watford City.  
Mertie was born in Portal, N.D., on April 7, 1931, the second of six children of Elmer and Margaret (Campbell) Stompro. After graduation he worked for the Soo Line Railroad in Portal until he joined the Army in January 1952. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in December 1953. After his service, he moved to Watford City to work in the oil field and continued until he retired from Amerada Hess. He married Roberta Running from Columbus on April 7, 1968. He was an avid Watford City Wolves sports fan and enjoyed planting his garden every year. He moved into the Good Shepherd Home in October 2009 and lived there until his death.
He is survived by his son, Mertie Jr. (Anna) Stompro of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; daughter, Melissa (Bradley Enger) Stompro of Crosby, N.D.; three grandchildren, Kylie and Gage Harrington and Sawyer Stompro; two brothers, Dewey and Jack; and two sisters, Shirley and Bonnie.  
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one brother, Jerry; and one nephew, Kevin.
Services were held at 11 a.m. CDT at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel, Mandan, N.D., on Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, followed by burial with military honors.
