The Watford City Golf Course officially opened for the season on Sunday, April 24. And with the opening came a noticeable sigh of relief not only from area golfers who have been dreaming of getting onto the course for over a month, but from the Watford City High School golf teams who have been agonizingly watching their season draw to a close without them getting the chance to golf in a tournament.
But for the Watford City girls that all changed in a hurry last Tuesday as the Wolves took to the course for the first time this season as they hosted an invitational tournament.
“For our first time on the course this season, I thought we played well,” stated Kelli Jo Taylor, girls’ head coach. “We ended up taking fourth with a score of 448.”
Shaunta Miller led the Wolves in scoring with an 18-hole score of 102, followed by Emilie Anderson with a 106. Rounding out the varsity scoring was Bessie Schmitz and Jayden White Owl with 120, Allison Monsen, 121 and Fallon Maston, 125.
“We are one of the top teams in the region,” states Taylor.
Taylor was also pleased with the play of her junior varsity team which also competed in Tuesday’s tournament.
“The JV girls played very well and Sydney Slais turned in one of the top scores of the day with a 110,” stated Taylor.
The next varsity girls tournament will be the NW Conference at Williston’s Eagle Ridge on May 9.
