Junior Gold dominates Crosby

Watford City’s Junior Gold hockey team picked up its second win of the season and its first league win as the Oilers defeated the Crosby Cubs, the defending league and state champions, 6-1.
Watford City put 50 shots on the net while limiting the Comets to 23 shots on Oiler netminder, Quayde Shores.
Cody Johnson scored the Oilers’ first goal when he picked up a loose puck from behind the Crosby net and stuffed it home unassisted. Brandon Taylor put the Oilers up 2-0 when he skated down the left side and wristed a shot over the shoulder of Crosby’s goalie. Davis Zubke assisted on the play.
In the second period, the Oilers struck again when sophomore defenseman, Beau Heiser, blasted a shot past a screened Comet goalie with  Reese Frick adding the assist on the scoring play.
The Oilers struck again on the power play when Jonathan Dunn picked up his fourth of the season, beating the Comet goalie with a wicked snap shot. Dunn’s goal was unassisted.
Crosby spoiled Shores’ shutout attempt at 2:52 in the third period after a flurry in front of the Oilers’ netminder, beating him on a rebound.
But the Oilers answered back a little over a minute later when Taylor added his second goal of the game, slamming home a feed from Daniel Marmon to put the locals up 5-1.
Brandon Allex closed out the scoring when the junior defenseman blasted a shot past the Comets’ netminder with Dalton Wright adding  the assist on the Allex goal.
Shores turned aside 22 Crosby shots to pick up his second win of the year.
The Oilers’ defensemen did a great job limiting the Comets scoring chances and getting offensive as they picked up two of the six goals.
The next action for the Oilers will be at 5 p.m. on Dec. 4 when Watford City takes on the Bismarck Demons in Hazen.
