Solid defense credited with win over Bombers

Watford City’s defense did everything right to help the Wolves to their second football win of the season last Friday night. And it was solid defensive play that earned the Wolves a 6-0 win over Lewis & Clark in a key Region III matchup.
While Watford City’s offense struggled, the defense shined holding the Bombers to only 126 rushing yards and 63 yards in the air.
Plus it was the Wolves’ defense that scored the only touchdown of the game.
“Again it was a key win for us,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach. “Coach Johnsrud did a great job getting the defense prepared and the entire defense played well.”
On defense, the Wolves scored their touchdown on Lewis & Clark’s first offensive play of the game when Davis Zubke caused a fumble and Josh Rolfsrud picked up the loose ball and ran it in for the score from 29 yards out.
Tyler Bates came up with two interceptions stopping two of the Bombers’ drives.
“On offense we moved the ball, but a lot of drives were stopped by our own mistakes,” stated Fridley. “We had our chances three or four times to score but we shot ourselves in the foot.”
Josh Rolfsrud ran for 112 yards to lead the Wolves’ offense.
“We play Velva this week in another key Region III game,” states Fridley. “The Aggies are 1-1 in Region III and a win would get the Wolves a home playoff game, more than likely.”
According to Fridley, Velva has a big running back and a quarterback that throws the ball very well.
“We need our offense to sustain some drives and our passing game must improve this week for us to win,” states Fridley.
The Wolves will take on Velva at 7 p.m on Friday at Fridley Field in Watford City’s Homecoming game.
