Watford City’s Cross Country teams had a good showing at the Mandan Kiwanis Meet on Sept. 9 with Kade Ross and Asha Smith finishing in the top two spots to pace the girls’ team.
With a large number of young runners on his varsity teams, Greg Brown, Wolves’ head coach, had the Wolves compete at the junior varsity level instead of at the varsity level.
“The athletes are working extremely hard in every practice,” states Brown. “In the past couple of weeks, I think we have finally left behind the mentality of we need to have an easy run, and have stepped up to work hard in every practice.”
At Mandan, Ross won the junior varsity girls division with a time of 16:32, while Smith was second with a time of 16:42.
“We have stepped up our expectations for the season for all the runners after seeing all of the improvements that have been going on,” states Brown.
Also placing in the girls junior varsity division was Addison Sundeen, 11th, 17:43; Tara Loomer, 14th, 18:02; Lea Arndt, 15th, 18:04; and Bessie Schmitz, 33rd, 19:33.
In the junior varsity boys division, Guy Ross took 26th with a time of 19:09, while Logan Gumke was 29th with a time of 19:13.
In the junior high boys division, Devin Schmitz finished 54th  with a time of 13:19 and Hunter DeFoe was 64th with a time of 14.07.
The Wolves will be competing in three meets this week as they travel to Tioga on Thursday and to Bismarck on Saturday. Watford City will host a meet, including a grade school fun run, at the Watford City Golf Course on Sept. 20.
