Watford girls devour Cougars

With a 50-39 win over the Heart River Cougars on Saturday, the Watford City varsity girls basketball team improved its season record to 13-2. This week, the Wolves will host Parshall in a District 15 matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Watford City used a tough defense to hold Heart River to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters of play, as the Wolves devoured the Cougars, 50-39, last Saturday afternoon.
Watford City got off to a good start holding a 14-8 first-quarter lead, and then outscoring the Cougars, 10-6 and 11-8, in the next two quarters of play en route to an easy win.
“We played excellent defense,” stated Berton Bates, Wolves’ head coach. “Marti Quale had an excellent game attacking the basket against Heart River’s very aggressive man-to-man defense.”
McKayla Haugeberg and Marti Quale led the Wolves in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the win. Also scoring for Watford City was Dani Bates with seven points, Alexis Sanford with five points, while Brianna Allex and Shanyce Fredericks netted two points each.
Haugeberg led Watford City with seven rebounds and six steals, while Quale had four assists and six rebounds, and Jayme Johnson had five steals.
“We need to shoot better from the free-thow line,” stated Bates on Watford City’s eight of 24 shooting at the charity stripe. “And we need to rebound better on the defensive end of the court.”
For the game, Watford City was good on 18 of 41 attempts from the field and hit on two of eight three-pointers.
