Watford wrestlers record three dual wins

The Wolves varsity wrestlers went three for three in dual action last week as Watford City defeated Sidney and picked up wins over New Town and Killdeer in a home triangular.
With the upcoming Christmas break, the Wolves next action will be on Jan. 6 when Watford City travels to Stanley.

Watford City 42, Sidney 39
Watford City picked up a big confidence-builder last Tuesday evening as the Wolves wrestled to a 42-39 win over the highly-ranked Sidney Eagles.
The match started at 152 pounds  with Karson Knudtson pinning Spencer Brost in 4:40 and Nolan Kalberer then winning by forfeit at 160 pounds to give the Wolves a 12-point lead. Kalin Mogen kept Watford City going with a pin in 3:08 over Dace Fisher at 171 pounds.
Branden Meuth, who wrestled his first match of the year, lost in a tough  10-8 overtime match at 189 pounds to Randy Green.
After Sidney won the next two matches by forfeit, Jade Hepper was pinned by Layne Schafer in 2:49 and 8th grader Coleton Jore was pinned by Chism Lewis in 44 seconds.
 Watford City’s Clay Jorgenson, 112 pounds, and Jake Scott, 119 pounds, then won by forfeit to put the Wolves on top 30-27.
Sidney went ahead when Isaac Laris was pinned by Jordan Stevens at 125 pounds, but Trevor Kalberer’s 8-4 decision over Scott Sturgis tied the match.
Gus Nelson took a forfeit at 135 pounds putting the Wolves ahead, 39-33, with Jake Thomas taking on Brennan Gorder in the decisive match of the evening.
Thomas took control of Gorder, a three-time state finalist in Montana, in the first period with a takedown and three-point near fall. He never looked back, winning the match 9-6 and giving the Wolves an unbeatable score of 42-33. Sidney won the last match as Keegan Thompson was pinned in 2:14 by Jayme Kelly at 145 pounds.

Watford City Triangular
Watford City 78, New Town 6

Watford City cruised to an easy win, 78-6, over New Town during Thursday night’s Triangular meet with the Wolves picking up six pins and seven forfeits.
Recording pins for the Wolves were Jake Scott, Joe Nelson, Gus Nelson, Karson Knudtson, Nolan Kalberer, and Kalin Mogen.

119: Jake Scott pinned Cruz Yellow Wolf, 2:46.

Watford City 40, Killdeer 36
The Wolves  completed their sweep at the Watford City Triangular on Thursday evening defeating a very strong Killdeer squad, 40-36.
The match started at 285 pounds with Logan Fettig being pinned by T.J. Moore in 23 seconds with Coleton Jore then taking the 103 match as he battled back from a 9-1 deficit to pin Tanner Rohde in 5:39.
Killdeer would take the next three weight classes with pins over Clay Jorgenson, Jake Scott and Joe Nelson.
Watford City then did a little juggling of their roster from 125 pounds to 145 pounds, and it paid off.
The Wolves moved Isaac Laris from  125 to 130 pounds where he decisioned Cole Kupper, 4-2, in overtime. Trevor Kalberer moved up from 130 pounds and wrestled Garett Tabor at 135 pounds where he pinned Tabor in 1:19 to cut the Cowboys’ lead to 24-15.
Watford then moved Brady Lund from 135 to 140 pounds with Lund pinning Skilur Dilley in 35 seconds. Jake Thomas also moved up a weight class to 145 pounds, and pinned Cameron Decoteau in 54 seconds.
Karson Knudtson decisioned River Voigt 10-5 at 152 pounds before Nolan Kalberer was pinned by Lane Overson in 5:34 to tie the score at 30-20.
Kalin Mogen then put the Wolves on top by four points as he scored a 9-1 major decision over Anthony Dukart.
The Wolves elected to forfeit the 189-pound match to Grady Houghton and then moved Branden Meuth up to 215 where he took on David Dukart.
With Watford City behind by two points, Meuth rose to the occasion and pinned Dukart in 5:12 to give the Wolves the win.

Wolves take 10th at Dickinson Classic
Watford City came up with a very impressive 10th place finish with just seven wrestlers competing in the varsity division of the Dickinson Classic Tournament this past weekend.
Jake Thomas, 140 pounds, went undefeated at the tournament. Thomas, who won his weight class for the second year in a row, decisioned Dillon Beeler, Glendive, 5-1, in the finals.
Taking third place for the Wolves was Kalin Mogen, 171 pounds, who ended the tournament with a 4-1 record. His only loss was a 6-4 decision to Leonard Eller, the No. 2 Class A wrestler.
Karson Knudtson, 152, and Nolan Kalberer, 160, placed fifth for the Wolves. Knudtson ended the tournament with a 3-2 record with both of his losses to ranked Class A wrestlers. Kalberer also ended the tournament with a 3-2 record with one of his losses to Marcus Bausman, the No. 1 rated wrestler in the state.
Isaac Laris and Trevor Kalberer both finished in eighth place. Laris, 125, ended the tournament with a 2-4 record with all of his losses coming to Class A or Montana wrestlers. Kalberer, 130, was 1-3 in the tournament.
The Wolves were without the services of Brady Lund, 135, and Branden Meuth, 189, who were sick.
Junior High Tournament
Five wrestlers competed in the junior varsity division of the tournament. At 119 pounds, Jake Scott placed sixth and Carson Hartwig placed ninth.
At 125 pounds, Joe Nelson placed fifth with a pin in 2:55 over Colton Rohrich from Fargo South.
Gus Nelson advanced to the finals with wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. He lost in the finals to Clayton Tangen from Dickinson High.
Austin Garmann placed fifth at 145 pounds with a 2-2 record.
