Watford City’s balanced running and passing attack kept Grant County off balance last Friday evening as the Wolves improved their season record to 6-0 with an impressive 38-0 win over the Storm.
The Wolves rushed for 197 yards and passed for 163 for a total of 360 yards while holding the Storm’s offense to a total of 91 yards.
The Wolves’ first score was a 20-yard pass completion from Trey Jacobson to Adam Brenna with Kalin Mogen kicking the PAT to put Watford City up 7-0 early in the first quarter. After forcing a Grant County punt, on Watford City’s next possession the Wolves went 79 yards in six plays with Brady Lund capping off the drive with a one-yard run for Watford City’s second touchdown. Mogen kicked the PAT to put Watford City on top 14-0.
Watford City’s quarterback and defensive back Trey Jacobson set up the Wolves’ third first quarter touchdown when he intercepted a Storm pass and returned it to the Gant County 45-yard line. On the first offensive play after the interception, Jacobson hooked up with Tyler Flatland down the right sideline for a touchdown. Mogen kicked the PAT giving Watford City a very comfortable 21-0 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, following another interception by Jacobson, Brady Lund was on the receiving end of a Jacobson 20-yard pass for another Wolves’ touchdown. Mogen’s PAT put Watford City on top 28-0.
On Watford City’s final scoring drive of the second quarter, Mogen kicked a 28-yard field goal to give the Wolves a 31-0 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Brady Lund went 65 yards on a sweep around left end, outracing the Storm defenders along the left sideline. Again, Mogen connected on the PAT to give the Wolves a 38-0 margin.
Neither team scored again and the Wolves upped their record to 6-0 and remained atop of Region IV standings.
“We played a solid game on both sides of the ball and our execution on both defense and offense was very good,” stated Fred Fridley, Wolves’ head coach.
On Friday, the Wolves travel to New Salem to take on the Holsteins.
“We now face a very good New Salem team which likes to run the football with a big fullback and speedy tailback,” states Fridley. “They have a 5-1 record and are playing for first place in the region, so we need to be at our best. It is a key game for playoff seating.”
Game time is set for 7 p.m. CST at New Salem.
