Watford City made short work of  Killdeer on Thursday night as the Wolves opened their home dual season with a 64-14 win over the Cowboys.
According to Mitch Greenwood, Wolves’ head coach, the dual was  first match of the season that counts toward Region IV standings and with the top two in the region advancing to State, the win was big for Watford City.
“Mathematically, the match against Killdeer was over even before it started,” stated Greenwood. “With Killdeer only wrestling five of the 14 contested weight classes, we had enough points through forfeits to  win the dual regardless of the outcome of any of the five matches that were actually contested.”
In the contested matches, Watford City earned points from Clay Jorgenson at 138 pounds and Keegan Thompson at 160 pounds, while Killdeer won the 113, 132 and 185-pound matches.
“Sometimes it can be tough to get excited about these types of contests, but it goes both ways,” stated Greenwood. “I’ve been on both sides of these types of matches and you just have to keep reminding the kids that they still need to wrestle hard.”
According to Greenwood, he expects to see a lot of forfeits from opposing teams in future regional duals as most teams do not have enough wrestlers to fill all of the weight classes.
“We might get two to four forfeits from some of the other teams in our region,” states Greenwood. “But we don’t want to rely on those points. We want to get on the mat and earn the points.”
In Thursday night’s dual, Keegan Thompson led the Wolves with a pin over David Arthur at 160 pounds, while Kolton Hall came up just short on points in one of the closest matches of the night as he dropped a 6-4 decision to Killdeer’s David Dukart. Dukart is currently the top ranked 195-pound wrestler in the region, while Hall is ranked second.
“Kolton wrestled a smarter and more intense style of match this time.  He’s going in the right direction,” stated Greenwood.
