AS I SEE IT

By Neal A. Shipman

This past Saturday, Lisa and I made our annual pilgrimage to the North Dakota State Fair as it began its 9-day run in Minot. It was nice to see a huge crowd return to the fairgrounds and enjoy a great summer day while pigging out at the food booths, enjoying the carnival rides and free entertainment stages, as well as visiting all of the exhibit halls and commercial buildings.
While there are those that love the State Fair for its nightly concerts, passing through all of the livestock barns and the 4-H and Open Class exhibits, that’s not what drives me to the fair. It’s the food, going through the commercial buildings, checking out the new recreational vehicles and people watching that I enjoy the most.
What has always amazed me at the fair is how many people buy all those crazy things that are being sold in the commercial buildings. I get it that people love to shop for hot tubs or maybe some new lawn furniture or a barbecue grill at the fair.
