The life of a member of congress has never been easy. It’s not meant to be. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators who were farmers, doctors, blacksmiths and store owners. That’s the genius of a two-year term for members of the U.S. House. That’s why it’s called “The People’s House.” It’s part of our founding documents: “Of, By and For the People.” The founders envisioned “real people” governing our country, not politicians. But the job has never been for the faint of heart. Our history is replete with stories of actual fist fights and gun duels on the floor of the House. Rhetorically, that’s still happening today. It’s an ugly time in our politics.
