My Dad was a Democrat. He adored John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. My first meaningful exposure to Presidential politics was the Jimmy Carter era. While Carter was a fine peanut farmer, he was a horrible President. The country was mired in a depressive state. So my political beliefs and ideals were shaped by the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. My Dad didn’t hate Republicans and I didn’t hate Democrats. Today’s Democrat party is unrecognizable to the party of old, it’s now a party consumed with vitriolic hatred for the 45th President, Donald J. Trump and his supporters. How does that inspire anyone?
I still remember the feeling I had when Reagan talked about America as the “Shining City on a Hill. He explained why he used that description in his farewell address to America in 1989: “The phrase comes from John Winthrop, who wrote it to describe the America he imagined. What he imagined was important because he was an early Pilgrim, an early freedom man. He journeyed here on what today we’d call a little wooden boat; and like the other Pilgrims, he was looking for a home that would be free.”
