This week Bismarck hosted the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference, now recognized as one of the biggest oil and gas gatherings anywhere in America, and perhaps the world, focused on one extraordinary blessing beneath North Dakota soil: the Bakken shale formation.
The gathering was years in the making led by Ron Ness from the North Dakota Petroleum Council and Foundation, the Department of Mineral Resources, and various Saskatchewan partners. It was a celebration of 75 years of oil dominance in North Dakota and 250 years as the United States of America.
America-first energy dominance didn’t begin in Washington, D.C. It began millions of years ago, miles below the surface, where God placed an abundance of oil and natural gas the world desperately needs today.
The challenge? That oil is trapped inside rock.
Just as the Wright Brothers changed history through innovation and persistence, North Dakota became home to one of the greatest engineering breakthroughs of modern times. Horizontal drilling combined with hydraulic fracturing unlocked energy that many experts once believed could never be recovered economically.
