A deep dive into county felonies

Editor’s Note: The Farmer has been inundated with questions from the community in regard to the amount of felonious crimes in McKenzie County.
We heard our readers questions and concerns and have taken a deep dive into the North Dakota Public Records database and compiled a factual comparison of the amount of felony arrests in 2023 and 2024. Below is the first in a continuing series of the statistics, along with explanation of various sentencing questions that have been brought forth.

February 2023 Case Breakdown
There were fifteen defendants charged with either a Class B or Class C felony in February 2023. There were 17 Class C felonies charged and two Class B felonies. Two cases were dismissed, and there were two cases that were originally charged as felonies, but were closed as misdemeanors. There is one open case.
In total, there was 21 years six months sentenced, and the time served totaled 141 days. There is approximately 9 years, 9 months left for defendants to serve stemming from February 2023.
