This year marks a significant milestone for Heggen Equipment as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, Heggen Equipment is hosting a 50th Anniversary Open House on October 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will feature a complimentary lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., door prizes, gift bags, and fun activities such as a golf putting game and cornhole in the shop area. A special slideshow will also highlight the company’s journey over the years.
History
Ahead of the celebration, Clayton Monsen, General Manager of Heggen Equipment, shared the company’s storied evolution with The Farmer. Founded in 1974 by John Heggen, the business has grown from a modest Allis-Chalmers dealership into a cornerstone of the Watford City community. Heggen initially acquired A&J Implement from Andy and Joe Kostenko, bringing the Bobcat brand with him after his tenure as an engineer for Melroe company in Gwinner, North Dakota. Between 1983 and 1996, the business operated as a Chevy Dealership. Under John’s leadership, Heggen Equipment expanded its offerings and established a full machine shop in 1983, catering to both agricultural and oilfield needs. The dealership began in a much smaller lot on Main Street, just one block south of the current 1st International Bank location. It was a very small operation.
Following John’s passing in 1997, the company transitioned to a family-run operation, with General Manager Clayton Monsen at the helm and John’s three daughters-Sarah, Ingrid, and Marn-continuing to guide the business. Over the past 40 years, Heggen Equipment has had two large additions to its current location, with a portion of the shop serving as Heggen Chevrolet-Buick from 1883-1996.
