In a passionate plea to the McKenzie County Commissioners on September 17, local resident Rose Summers, urged the board to place an initiative on the November 2024 ballot to abolish the county’s cloud seeding program, which has been in place since the late 1960s - without a public vote, noted Summers. During the recent commissioners’ meeting, Summers emphasized the importance of giving the community a voice on an issue that has sparked considerable debate and concern among residents.
Summers outlined that the cloud seeding program, initially implemented for hail reduction, has operated under a legislative framework established between 1965 and 1969. “[The program]’s never had a vote. It’s just been there,” she stated, highlighting the growing public sentiment against the program.
