A furry friend will soon be making a difference in area classrooms. Following a nationwide trend, therapy dogs are proving to be more than just cuddly companions; they’re also powerful tools for helping students cope with stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges.
At their Aug. 20, meeting, the McKenzie County board of Commissioners unanimously approved the inclusion of a $50,000 donation from Chord Energy to the budget. This donation will fund a therapy dog for the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). The dog will primarily be used in schools and other public programs.
Lt. Edward Martinez of the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office led the discussion, which centered around the positive impact a therapy dog can have on children and the community. He also spoke briefly about the responsibilities of MCSO in providing additional handlers for the dog, to assist school resource officers in effectively utilizing the dog in school environments.
