On Aug. 20, 2024, the McKenzie County Board of Commissioners approved a conditional use permit for the Dakota Diggers Data Center, with a requirement for noise level monitoring.
The Dakota Diggers project aims to establish a Bitcoin mine in McKenzie County, and the primary concern expressed at the meeting was the potential noise level generated by the facility.
Owners of the facility have conducted an acoustic study and determined that the noise level would be less than 40 decibels at 1,200 feet. After some debate about how to determine decibels accurately, accounting for factors such as wind and other ambient noise, the decision was made to ensure that the noise level remains within acceptable limits within a six-month time frame to allow for monitoring and address any noise issues that may arise.
