On Tuesday, Dec.6 , the motion was passed to approve a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of four percent for all county employees during the McKenzie County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting. Cost of living is defined as the amount of money needed to pay for the basic common expenses required to maintain a certain lifestyle. This COLA will be applied to the base pay of all county employees and will be effective starting Jan. 1, 2023.
The COLA is looked at regularly to try and account for inflation rates and to ensure county employees are compensated appropriately given the economic climate. Nationally, inflation rates have increased from 1.2 percent in 2020, to 8.3 percent in 2022. This high rate of inflation has greatly increased the cost of living for Americans.
