Election signs are sprouting up all over across the county for election candidates, as the first of two chances to cast a ballot approaches.

The Primary Election will be held on June 9, and with the names set for candidates, the only one that will see anyone not continue to November will be that of the county commission race. Two seats are up for grabs and three individuals have tossed their hat in the ring.

Incumbent County Commissioner, Kathy Skarda, will face challengers Rex Korslien and Kerry Thompson. Howdy Lawlar quietly and at the last minute announced that he would not be seeking reelection at the April 7 County Commission Meeting.

Incumbent Sheriff Matthew Johansen will face a challenger this time around to see if the voters give him a third term in the top county cop role, or decide to go a different direction. John Hance, a former deputy at the sheriff’s office and current sergeant for the Watford City Police is seeking the position. Johansen ran unopposed four years prior for his second term.
