Several wildfires beginning on Saturday, Oct. 5, ravaged western North Dakota, including McKenzie County. The fires caused widespread damage and posed a significant threat to the region. The North Dakota Response website, www.ndresponse.gov, continues to provide critical updates on the status of these fires, including road closures, air quality alerts, and evacuation orders.
The U.S. Forest Service, in conjunction with local and regional fire departments, have been actively involved in the firefighting efforts, deploying crews, equipment, and aircrafts to help contain the flames.
With dry conditions and strong winds persisting, the risk of new fires starting remains high. The fire season is expected to continue for several more weeks.
The Elkhorn Fire, the largest of the blazes south of Watford City, burned for two weeks and consumed 10,885 acres. It was reported as being 100 percent contained as of Wednesday, Oct. 16.
