With the month of May already in the books, North Dakota agriculture is showing a generally optimistic picture. Despite some limited fieldwork opportunities due to persistent moisture, farmers have made significant strides in planting, with many key crops well ahead of their five-year averages.

The latest reports from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending May 25, 2025, indicate that only a handful of days were suitable for fieldwork. This reflects the widespread precipitation across the region, which has led to robust topsoil moisture supplies, rated as 74 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture also remains strong, with 72 percent adequate and seven percent surplus. While this moisture is beneficial for emerging crops, it has undeniably slowed down the final push for planting in some areas.
