Fortner: Our Moment is Now to Forge Ahead

In a world that has been rife with uncertainty about the future of energy, North Dakota stands as a beacon of resilience and innovation. Having weathered years of regulatory storms and political headwinds, our state’s coal industry has not only survived, but thrived, setting the standard for reliability, economic growth, and community leadership.

These last four years have tested our resolve. We confronted suffocating regulations from the EPA and the previous administration, changes that threatened the core of our industry - making it nearly impossible to mine coal, generate electricity, or even store our own ash. Yet, unlike many, North Dakota didn’t buckle. We tightened our belts, doubled down on responsible operations, and continued to set the bar for environmental standards - never once violating a federal air quality standard since the EPA was first established in 1972. It’s a badge of honor and a testament to the grit of our people.
