Greater Northwest Publishing celebrates 50 years

The plant that has printed the McKenzie County Farmer for decades celebrated its 50th year of service last week.
After several northwest North Dakota newspapers were forced to discontinue printing on their own presses, Greater Northwest Publishing (GNWP), Minot, was formed on March 17, 1973.
Wednesday, last week, current board members representing the McKenzie County Farmer, The Journal, Tioga Tribune and Kenmare News were among those attending the 50th Annual GNWP meeting. Other shareholder members are the Burke County Tribune, the Mountrail County Promoter, the Westhope Standard and the Renville County Farmer.

The last surviving charter member of the corporation, Glen Froseth of Kenmare, shared stories with younger board members about what facilitated the need for a joint publishing plant and how it all came together.
“The paper companies quit making flat sheet press paper, so the weeklies (meaning newspapers published weekly) were having to haul their papers great distances for press services,” explained Froseth.
