North Dakota Mineral Resource Director, Lynn Helms, sat down with KTGO Radio Host of “What’s On Your Mind?” and co-owner of The Farmer, Scott Hennen, during the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference (WBPC).
Thousands of industry professionals attended the conference and trade show held in Bismarck, When Hennen asked about the importance of the WBPC Helms replied, “This is the biggest oil and gas show north of Houston, Texas, and this is the place where hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling were put together to introduce unconventional resources to the world.”
Helms noted the that hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling changed the trajectory of North Dakota forever.
Nodding in agreement, Hennen inquired to find out more about Helms history in the North Dakota oil and gas industry.
“Let’s talk about your role in all of this, going back to being in the industry and then becoming a regulator. Start at the beginning, did you ever envision we’d get to this place?”
Helms said after graduating from college in 1978, he spent two years working for Texaco on shallow natural gas in Montana.
“As you know, at that time, natural gas was selling for $10-$12 per 1,000 cubic feet. And we were convinced that we were going to run out,” he explained.
