Local school official plays role federal funding for after school programs

MCF Newsroom reports
After-school programs across North Dakota received a major boost last week as the U.S. Department of Education released funding for 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The move comes after efforts by North Dakota superintendents and congressional leaders highlighted the importance of the program, with Western Dakota Energy Association board member, McKenzie County Public School Superintendent Steve Holen playing a critical role.
Holen was one of the first to raise concerns about the delay in funding, working alongside Bismarck Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Fastnacht to bring the issue to Senator John Hoeven’s attention.
“The funding provides about $3.5 million for fiscal year 2025 to North Dakota applications regarding after-school and summer learning programs,” Holen said. “These programs are vital to communities. They help fill the gap in terms of daycare and workforce needs.”
Hoeven quickly acted, working with the Office of Management and Budget to secure the release of the funds.
