For Ayla Norton, a senior at Watford City High School, a simple trip to the mailbox recently transformed into a life-changing achievement. Norton has been officially selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), an esteemed organization recognizing top scholars who demonstrate outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment.
The invitation, which recognizes Norton’s “superior academic achievement,” places her in a global community of over two million members across 170 countries. “When I first got the notification from NSHSS I was curious to what it was and after reading it I was in complete shock and excited,” Norton shared. Norton’s journey to academic excellence is rooted in a story of family strength. After moving in with her grandparents at the age of five due to unfortunate circumstances, Norton credits her grandmother and grandfather, Rocky and Laura Norton, and mother, Savannah Norton, for providing the “stability, structure, and unconditional support” necessary to thrive. “Growing up in their care shaped my values, resilience, and sense of responsibility, and it continues to influence the person I am today,” Norton said. Her guardians have watched this growth with immense pride, noting her transition into a “confident and motivated student who takes pride in her work.” They noted that beyond her grades, her character truly defines her. “ She is hardworking, respectful, determined, and tries to do the right thing...she doesn’t give up easily when things get tough.”
