McKenzie County is celebrating the recognition of its very own Commissioner Kathy Skarda, who has recently received the prestigious 2025 Excellence in County Government Award in the County Commissioner category from the North Dakota Association of Counties (NDACo) and the ND County Commissioners Association. The award recognizes current county officials for their “dedication, leadership and involvement” and specifically highlights “introduction or pursuit of innovative improvements in county government” and “demonstration of substantial and consistent leadership.”
Commissioner Skarda’s nomination was submitted by the McKenzie County Board of County Commissioners, recognizing her nearly eleven years of service, which began in December 2014. Her tenure has been marked by a period of immense change and rapid growth fueled by the Bakken oil activity in Western North Dakota.
McKenzie County Vice Chairman Joel Brown highlighted her unwavering commitment in his letter of recommendation. He noted that during this extraordinary period, “Kathy remained grounded and focused, ensuring that the County’s response was thoughtful, sustainable, and centered on the well-being of our residents.” Brown added that he has come to “deeply admire her work ethic and tenacity. Kathy immerses herself in the details of every issue, asking the right questions and never settling for surface-level understanding.”
