The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has released the statistics for the crime reports handled by the department in 2023. These numbers do not include cases that were handled by the Northwest Narcotic Task Force, the Watford City Police Department, or any state agency.
The data includes criminal offenses that were verified by the MCSO to have occurred, and it does not indicate charges or arrests, only the verification that an offense occurred.
There were a total of 1,090 incidents that happened during 2023. This is a slight increase over the numbers of 2022, which totaled 1,082. Both years had a significantly lower total than 2019, which had the highest total for the past six years, with 1,657 incidents.
The number of violent crimes last year was 133, including two murders, two cases of felonious restraint, 29 instances of domestic violence, 21 counts of terrorizing and 110 incidents of assault, harassment, and other violent offenses.
