In the May 2024 Director’s Cut, given by Director of North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources Lynn Helms, it was announced that North Dakota had set two new records in the energy industry.
In March, there was an all-time high number of producing wells, with a state-wide total of 18,854. Within McKenzie County, there are now 6,293 wells capable of producing oil, and 5,599 were actively producing in March. Even though the state set a new record for actively producing wells, the number of inactive wells also rose to 1,949 wells statewide.
There were 72 newly permitted wells in the state, and 345 waiting on completion. Fifty-six new wells were completed, and there were 40 active rigs. Helms said that while the rig count remained low, it is expected to increase into the mid-forties with a gradual increase expected over the next two years.
