The Roughrider Fund (RRF) along with a committee was created by Watford City voters in 1998, to support projects that enhance the city, making it a great place to live as well as visit according to Vawnita Best, Community and Business Development director. Some of the most notable enhancements supported by the RRF have been the construction of the Wild West Water Park, the McKenzie County Medical Complex and the construction of the Rough Rider Center.
Throughout 2023 the RRF has contributed to projects including Elite Cabinets & Building Supplies, The Shed, H&M Steakhouse, the McKenzie Health Center, Aligned Chiropractic, and Home Instead PT. All of these ventures participated in the Business Startup and Expansion Forgivable Loan Program.
