A sport utility vehicle rapidly went up in flames on the eastbound shoulder of U.S. Highway 85 at milepost 158, about one mile west of the Patriot Fuels truck stop, minutes before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17.

The flaming auto brought Alexander Rural Fire Department, McKenzie County Ambulance, and McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office units to the scene. Four fire apparatus brought the incident quickly under control and there were no reported injuries.

Eastbound traffic was stopped as crews worked the scene and backed up for about two miles before traffic began slowly moving again twenty minutes later.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and the cause was not immediately disclosed. West winds were strong at the time and the rapid response prevented the fire from spreading into the ditch of dried grasses adjacent to the vehicle and creating additional trouble.
