TANK BATTERY EXPLOSION SHUTS DOWN PORTION OF HIGHWAY 23

The North Dakota Highway Patrol released information to the public via social media at approximately 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, informing the public that Highway 23 is closed at Johnson’s Corner, mile marker 13, due to tank battery explosion.

Emergency responders are on scene. The explosion is currently contained to one tank, and there is an ongoing risk of additional explosions involving the remaining four tanks. The public is urged to avoid this area. There is no estimated timeframe for reopening the roadway at this time.

Reroute Information provided by NDHP is as follows:

• Eastbound traffic from Watford City on Highway 23 will be rerouted south on 114th Ave. NW, then east on Beavercreek Road, and north on 110th Ave. NW to the Johnson’s Corner roundabout.

• Westbound traffic from Johnson’s Corner will be rerouted south on 110th Ave. NW, then west on Beavercreek Road, and north on 114th Ave. NW, returning traffic to Highway 23. Motorists should expect delays, avoid the area if possible, and follow directions from emergency personnel.
