Where is winter and spring outlook

Travis Bateman

If you’re wondering where our typical North Dakota winter, the cold, and certainly the snow is, you’re not alone.
It has been an abnormally dry winter for the area and much of the nation. Winter snowpack and moisture content has been minimal. Snow levels in the Missouri and Yellowstone River Basins that feed our area and Lake Sakakawea are critically low as of press time having experienced an already early thaw and flow and it isn’t looking good for another strong flow in the rivers at this point.

The Tobacco Gardens Bay boat ramp may not be useable this season if conditions continue to worsen according to discussion at the recent county park board meeting.

According to data obtained from the US Army Corps of Engineers the updated 2026 calendar year runoff forecast for the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa, continues to be below average.
