Douglas C. Monson, 61, of Williston, N.D., died peacefully at his home on Jan. 19, 2012.
His funeral service will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Jan. 25, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church by Father Dennis Schafer. Interment will follow at the Alexander Cemetery.
An evening vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, Jan. 24, at Everson Funeral Home in Williston.
Douglas Chester Monson was born in Williston on May 10, 1950, to Chester and Lorraine (Weber) Monson. He was raised in rural Alexander, N.D., and attended Alexander schools, where he excelled in basketball as a starter for the team and as an All-Conference Player. He graduated from Alexander High School in 1968. Upon high school graduation, Doug attended the University of North Dakota - Williston (Williston State College) and Dickinson State University where he earned his bachelors degree in Business Administration.
Doug was united in marriage to Dorothy Jeannotte. Children, Stacy, Reese and Jason completed the family.
Doug worked the farm with his favorite uncle, Roy, until he started his position with Conlin’s as a carpet layer. In 1977, he started employment with Amerada Hess Corporation at the Tioga office, where he worked in various positions. On April 30, 2010, after 33 years with Hess, he retired as a Senior Lease Operator.
Doug’s favorite times were spent with his friends riding motorcycles. He was an avid bowler. He also enjoyed city league softball and basketball. Other interests included going for walks, reading, coin collecting, studying history, playing horse shoes, golfing and doing yard work and gardening.
Surviving Doug in death are his mother, Lorraine Monson of Alexander, most recently of the Good Shepherd Home in Watford City, N.D.; one daughter, Stacy (Darren) Johnston of Williston; two sons, Reese (Crystal) Monson and Jason (Alyssa) Monson all of Williston; brother, Rocky Monson of Alexander; sister, Sharon (Marvin) Haugland of South Heart, N.D.; grandchildren, Chance (Mandy), Teagan, Dillon, KeeAnna, Eli, Caleb, Sapphire, Dylan, Braden, and Dawson, all of Williston; niece, Kamee (Bob) Sabrosky, Gladstone, N.D.; and nephews, Larry Haugland, Springbrook, N.D., and Brent Haugland, Dickinson, N.D.;  and godson, Cody (Haley) Jeannotte, Williston. Also left to mourn Doug is his lifelong childhood friend, Larry (Rae) Olson, Williston.
Preceding Doug in death were his father, Chester Monson; his very special niece, Katrina; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Those who were privileged to really know Doug knew he was unstoppable if you needed him. Yet, he was strong enough to let you know when he needed you. He was a quiet, steady, honorable man with a wry wit and sense of humor. Always reliable in anything he did, be it work or play. He was the father any child would wish for. He truly loved to be with and spoil his grandchildren. A good man is truly honored when his children, grandchildren and brother wished to be just like him.
Farewell, our beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. You will be greatly missed.
